Police in the Northern Region have assured residents of Chereponi and its environs of maximum security following recent violent clashes between the Konkombas and Anufuls.
The clashes reportedly started on Friday when one faction reportedly opened fire on wedding guests leading to a reprisal.
Two people died and many others were injured with several properties destroyed as a result of the clashes. There were reprisal attacks over the weekend and on Monday.
Many of the displaced are women and children in the area whose homes have been razed.
Citi News reports indicate that most villages within the area have been deserted.
But the Northern Regional Police Command PRO, DSP Yusif Tanko told Citi News that the Police have intensified their patrols to restore safety to the area.
“Five persons in connection with the violence have been arrested and we have extended our patrols to a lot of places within the Chereponi, Saboba and some parts of the Yendi district. So we are on it and trying very hard to ensure that the situation is brought under control so that normal life will continue at the place,” he said.
The suspects are 26-year-old Malik Mohammed, an Anuful, 23-year-old Mamudu Manaduru, an Anuful and Ebanuibo Bilalukum, aged 37, a Konkomba.
The others are Naweiban Petsey, 33-year-old, Konkomba and Yatali Nahundo, aged 37, a Konkomba.
‘Conflicts can’t be resolved by violence’
Meanwhile, the government has told feuding factions in Chereponi that violence is not a good path for resolving challenges in society.
Mr Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, the Information Minister, addressing journalists at a media encounter in Accra on Sunday, said security personnel have been deployed to the area to prevent further escalation of violence.
He said after peace and order has been restored to the area efforts would be made to understand the underlining factors and resolve the conflict once and for all.
The Minister said when people resort to violence in resolving their differences the law of the country must take its course.
