Pelungu Chief urges residents to prioritize sanitation

The Chief of Pelungu in the Nabdam District of Upper East Region, Naab Sierig Soore Sobil IV has tasked his people to prioritize sanitation as it is a surest way of eliminating some preventable diseases.

According to Naab Sobil IV some ailments among people of Pelungu and the public can be attributed to poor sanitation practice.

It is against this backdrop that he advised the community members to ensure environmental and personal upkeep.

The Chief of Pelungu made these attributions when he led his people to embark on a massive cleanup exercise. Naab Sobil pledged to end open defecation in his community starting from June this year.

“I want to urge everybody that they shouldn’t let this exercise end today. If they will agree, starting from June, let’s all take it upon ourselves that if you are going to defecate, at least, in the interim, let’s dig and bury our faeces always. Even if a visitor comes to your house, tell that visitor to take a hole and bury it after defecating. So, starting from June, we don’t want anybody to defecate outside.” He stated.

Among participants for the exercise included the District Chief Exercise (DCE) for Nabdam, Agnes Anamoo. The participants aided the chief to clean the Pelungu market, the streets and collected filth which was disposed in refused waste containers.

The DCE commended the Chief for complementing the efforts of government in ensuring good sanitation in the country. She pledged to assist Chiefs in the district in passing bye-laws that will sanction individuals caught practicing poor sanitation.

“He [Chief] said we should make bye-laws. At assembly meeting, I will include it that if any chief organizes a clean-up campaign and one refuses to come out and participate, then the chief have gotten every right to invite you, not to sanction you in a way that it will hurt you in life but to let you know that you have wronged”, she said.

Nabdam District Environmental and Sanitation Officer, Felix Maape also commended the Chief of Pelungu for the initiative.
