Orthopaedic Surgeon calls for the establishment of bone banks in Ghana

A Senior Specialist of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr. Dominic Konadu-Yeboah is advocating for an establishment of bone banks in the country for the treatment of fractures.

Just as hospitals have blood banks to replace lost blood of patients, Ghana has no single bone bank for the treatment of fractures. The absence of a bone bank in the country is therefore contributing to many amputations of accident victims.

“There are certain situations when somebody gets a fracture and the bone is extruded at the scene of the injury. So, the person arrives at the hospital without a huge segment of bone. In that case, we need another bone of that length to be able to replace the lost bone. And the practice is that we fall on a bone bank.” Dr. Konadu-Yeboah said.

It is for this reason that Dr. Konadu-Yeboah is calling for a legal procedure for the establishment of bone banks in the country to help avert loss of limbs due to fractures.

“We don’t have a bone in Ghana and to do that requires some Parliamentary procedures. So we are calling on the various stakeholders to help take into motion the processes to setup a national bone bank to enhance the work of the Orthopaedic Surgeon to help safe the good number of limbs that are lost because we cannot reconstruct after injury.” He appealed.

The Senior Specialist on Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at KATH made this clarion call in an interview with A1 News at the end of a 3 day workshop held in Kumasi for about 40 journalists on how to report on trauma and orthopaedic cases in the country.

The training which was organized by AO Alliance in collaboration with Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons is part of efforts to create awareness on paediatric trauma and fractures towards reducing morbidity, mortality and disability in the country. An inadequate Orthopaedic Surgeons in the country to meet the growing population according to Dr. Konadu-Yeboah is also contributing to a high prevalence of orthopedic cases Ghana witnesses.

“Countrywide, we have about 50 Orthopaedic Surgeons and Ghana’s current population is estimated about 30.2 million. So, 50 Orthopaedic Surgeon to the population is woefully inadequate.” He asserted.
