Illegal mining activities polluting the Black Volta

Lawra, (U/W), April 3, GNA – The Executive Committee of the Lawra District Assembly has said illegal mining activities on the Burkinabe side of the Black Volta, closer to Dikpe, is posing a threat to the security of water and life in the river.

Dr Musheibu Mohammed Alfa, Deputy Upper West Regional Minister, appealed to Assembly members especially those with electoral areas bordering the Black Volta to monitor the unfolding developments to provide information to the Assembly.
Dr Alfa, who is also the Acting Lawra District Chief Executive (DCE), informed the house that he has taken the issue up at the Regional level and the house would be updated on collaborative actions between the Ghanaian and Burkinabe security officials.
He pleaded with the Assembly to consider approving the possibility of procuring a water tank to help safeguard the health of detained suspects at the police station.
Dr Alfa said the District Security Committee acting upon recommendations by the Traditional Council bordering on the impasse between Baazing and Domwine communities has relocated the Ghana Social Opportunities Project (GSOP) Climate Change Project to an undisputed area within the Baazing community.
The Committee had also lifted the farming embargo on the disputed area, he said, adding that the situation nonetheless is still being monitored by security operatives in the District.
On the impasse between Orbile and Yikpe communities, Dr Alfa said it was worthy to note that the Lawra District Security Committee was yet to be briefed on the resolution processes initiated by the parties.
