We are ready to form a joint team with Chokosis to end conflict – Konkombas

The renewed communal conflict in the Chereponi District of the Northern Region that has claimed dozens of lives and left property running into millions of Ghana Cedis destroyed could be soon resolved if the Chokosis welcome a call by the Konkombas for a joint team from both sides to begin peace talks to end the conflict.

In a press statement signed and released on Sunday January 5, 2019 by the National President of the Konkomba Youth Association (KOYA), Charles Nyojah, the leadership of the association is willing to form a joint team with the leadership of Chokosis to jointly release press statements or hold press conferences to call for calm and bring to an end, on-going killings and wanton destruction of property.

The statement said: “We believe our people, both Komnkombas and Chokosis need our collective leadership now than ever and so we call on all actors in the conflict (Youth Group Leaders, the Police, the Military and the Media) to eschew the tendency of playing any side against the other.”

The statement further said: “We kindly plead with the media to help us in this call for peace and humanitarian support for people in the Chereponi District and its environs.”

Meanwhile, KOYA has noticed with concern the calls from some Konkomba communities that they have been attacked by people  spotted in camouflage uniforms, whom they assumed to be soldiers, only for such persons to burn  down their villages.

According to the association, the troops deployed to the troubled area are currently stationed at Teakasu, Wenchiki, and Chereponi all Chokosi communities. As a result, the Chokosis on Friday burnt down Nanchem, Namour Nangbang, Tambong and part of Tigenga all of which are Konkomba communities in the Chereponi District. It is therefore, appealing to the government for protection in the Konkomba areas as well.

On Friday January, 4, KOYA held a press conference in Accra and accused the District Chief Executive of Chereponi, Tahidu Abdul Razak of ignoring intelligence its leadership provided prior to the latest conflict.

KOYA said the DCE who doubles as the chairman of the District Security Council should have acted on the intelligence its leaders provided him and his security council regarding the preparedness of the Chokosis to attack Konkombas. This, the association says the DCE should be held responsible for the renewed clashes.
