Upper East Regional Minister Leads REGSEC Team to Gbane to Enforce High Court Order

The Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugri Donatus Atanga, has led a high-level delegation to the Gbane mining enclave following a directive from the High Court aimed at ensuring the safety and operational continuity of a miner whose legal rights were recently upheld.

The visit, undertaken alongside members of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), was intended to assess the situation on the ground and develop measures to enforce the court ruling while maintaining peace within the community.

Authorities say the intervention comes amid heightened tensions in the area, as the court’s decision has been met with resistance from traditional authorities, including the chiefs of Tongo and Gbane, as well as some community members who have protested against the miner’s return to operations.

According to officials, the minister’s visit sought to bridge the gap between the legal directive and community concerns by engaging stakeholders and evaluating the security situation at the mining site.

Also present during the visit was Nii Moi Thompson, who joined the delegation while in the region for planning engagements. His participation underscored the broader national importance of the mining enclave and the need to balance security with sustainable development in mining communities.

Officials say insights gathered from the visit will inform both immediate security arrangements and long-term development strategies for communities within the Talensi District, where mining remains a key economic activity.

The Regional Minister reaffirmed government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law while working with traditional leaders, community members, and stakeholders to maintain peace and stability in the area.
