Regional Minister encourages chiefs to launch crusade against filth

Upper East Regional Minister, Ambassador Paulina Patience Abayage has called on chiefs, teachers, parents and all well-meaning people of the region to launch a robust crusade to deal with filth, which has become a threat to the environment and human kind.

Speaking at Bongo in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region to commemorate Ghanas 62nd Independence Anniversary, the Minister attributed the indiscriminate littering of the environment to growing rate of indiscipline and cautioned the public about consequences of a filthy environment.

Ambassador Abayage admitted that despite the many successes that Ghana has achieved, the challenge of filthy environment and homes still exist which require concerted efforts in tackling them.

The Minister, like many other concerned persons believes that, filthy communities and towns are more likely to be poor and unable to attract any serious extenal investor, nor provide any decent jobs for their youth, hence the need for all hands on deck to encourage people to keep their immediate environments clean.

Upper East Regional capital, Bolgatanga which some time ago was adjudged the cleanest Municipality in Ghana, now has dropped from its glory to join the list of Municipalities with filthy suburbs in the country.

A recent clean up exercise organised by the Bolgatanga Municipality, could not attract more residents to clean their environment, probably because people are used to filthy environment or the Assembly did not sensize the public enough to get them to join the exercise.
