Hundreds of residents in the Pogmolgu-Sirigu community in the Kassena-Nankana West District of the Upper East Region are still counting their losses after a heavy rainstorm hit the area on Tuesday killing two persons.
According to local authorities in the area, over 200 homes and some basic schools were badly damaged. Some houses and schools had their roofs ripped off while others were razed down. Trees and electricity poles were also uprooted.
Narrating the incident to A1 News, Assemblyman of the Sirigu Electoral area, Akankele Moses, said members of the community are traumatized by the disaster.
“I don’t know what to say; almost every household in one way or the other, has been affected by the heavy rainstorm, directly or indirectly. All that we are expecting from relevant authorities, is assistance in anyway they can. … we are just begging for help from all angles.” He said.
Meanwhile, the District Chief Executive of the Kassena-Nankana District, Gerald Ataogye together with some officials of the National Disaster Management Organization on Wednesday visited some affected areas of the community to assess the level of destruction.
