Mr Ambrose Dery, the Interior Minister, has been presented with the report of the fact-finding Committee on the Konkomba-Anufor Conflict.
The report was presented to the Minister on Tuesday by the Chairman of the Committee, Mr Patrick Kwarteng Acheampong, a former Inspector General of Police (IGP).
It would be recalled that following the recent clashes between the Konkombas and the Anufors in the Chereponi and parts of Saboba districts, the Minister for the Interior, on behalf of the President, appointed a seven-member Committee to investigate the circumstances leading to the June 2018 and January 2019 conflicts in the area.
The terms of reference of the Committee include to identify the remote and immediate causes of the 1st January, 2019 conflict between the Anufors and the Konkombas in Chereponi and surrounding areas.
The Committee was also to delve into any matter incidental to the conflict and to make appropriate recommendations.
Other members include Assistant Commissioner Paul K. Ahiakpor of the Ghana Revenue Authority; Father Thaddeus Kussah, Executive Secretary, Northern Regional Peace Council; Reverend Kofi James Azumah, Anufors’ Representative; Mr Jagri Yakpir Joshua, Konkombas’ Representative; Mr Francis A. Asobayire, Assistant State Attorney; and Madam Eva A. Atogiba, ADIIA, RCC.
Receiving the report, Mr Dery lauded the Committee for a very good work done.
He expressed gratitude to the security agencies who worked tirelessly to restore peace in Dagbon and the affected areas.
Mr Dery said the recommendations of the report would be implemented by the Government expeditiously to promote peace in the area.
He said following the enskinment of the new Ya-Na, the Northern Region had been calm, relatively more peaceful than in the past.
“And we believe that would serve as an inspiration for all other bodies also to submit themselves for resolution,” he said.
“We believe that this report would enhance all capacities for the two ethnic groups to reconcile.”
He said Ghana was safer each day; and that Ghanaians must not relent in their efforts to promote the peace and security of the nation.
Mr Salifu Saeed, the Northern Regional Minister, on behalf of the Anufors and the Konkombas, expressed gratitude to the Committee for the good work done.
Mr Acheampong, who gave an overview of the circumstances leading to the setting up of the Committee, said it was mandated to find out the route causes of the violence and to come out with lasting solutions.
Present at the ceremony were Mr Henry Quartey, the Deputy Interior Minister, Mr James Oppong-Boanuh, the Deputy IGP, and Mrs Adelaide Anno-Kumi, the Chief Director, Ministry of the Interior.
