Coffin makers in the Bolgatanga Municipality are calling on government to stabilize the Cedi and improve on the economy in order to boost businesses and improve on people’s ability to buy.
They say people are not able to buy their basic needs due to the hard times and therefore are cutting down on their expenditure on securing befitting burial for their departed relations.
Speaking on A1 News about their plight, Mr. Felix Peinipa, the Chairman of the Carpenter Association of Bolgatanga expressed dissatisfaction with the slow pace of their sales and faulted that to the Ghana Cedi losing its value in the international market.
“…the Cedi depreciation has brought about low patronage of our products, why because anytime people come to buy coffin, they say our prices are too much yet forgetting the materials such as wood, nails and others used in making the coffins are also expensive on the markets. For about two weeks now, not a single coffin has been bought; meanwhile most of us have families who are depending heavily on us. All that we are asking from the government is to stabilize the Cedi so that prices of products can also come down small, if not, directly or indirectly we are going out of business and I know the government do not want that to happen.” Mr. Peinipa appealed.
He added that government should take pragmatic measures to kick out foreigners who are seriously doing illegal logging in most of the forest reserves in country, if not, it will come to a time when the country will start importing woods.
