Bongo may not achieve Open Defecation Free by September 2019

Hon. Peter Ayinbisa - Bongo DCE

There are signals that the Bongo District in the Upper East Region which is expected to achieve an Open Defecation Free in all its communities by September 2019, may not be able to achieve status.

Only 29 communities out of the about 168 in the district have been declared Open Defecation Free. 13 more are at the verge of being verified by the Regional Inter-Agency Coordinating Committee.

With this number, District Chief Executive for Bongo, Peter Ayinbisa fears the district cannot become an Open Defecation Free by the stipulated period.

It will be recalled that Mr. Ayinbisa in April 2018 promised to reward assembly members that would work hard to achieve Open Defecation Free in their Electoral Area with a project.

A year down the line, not even a single community have been added to the 29 Open Defecation Free communities.

It is against this backdrop that Mr. Ayinbisa regretted that the district may not achieve the set target before the September deadline. He said this during the assembly’s general meeting held on Tuesday in Bongo.
