In the wake of increasing reports of kidnapping and other forms of violent crimes against minors, parents and teachers have been advised to devote some time to educate their children on safety and security issues.

A Physician Assistant at Afrikids Medical Center and a parent in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region, Benjamin Banahene in an interview on A1 Radio said many children on daily basis are exposed to danger as they walk to and from school and other social gatherings.

According to him, this situation has pushed many children to cultivate the habit of asking for “lift” from adults they do not know.

“This is dangerous and parents must educate their children to desist from it. Sometimes you will be driving or riding and these children will be stopping you to give them lift and I ask myself, ‘lift to where?’ ” Mr. Banahene said.

In recent times there have been cases of children being kidnapped in some parts of Ghana and the Upper East region has had its share of this when a child was kidnapped by some two men at Zuarungu in the Bolgatanga East District.

Mr. Banahene believes that, if children become aware of the dangers around them and parents and guardians also spend a little more time to send their children to school and pick them up from school, many children will be protected from kidnappers and other criminals who can also harm them.
