Brief History Of NMTC – Tamale

The Nurses’ and Midwives’ Training College, Tamale was built and commissioned in 1974 and admitted its first batch of Eighteen (18) students in the same year for the Enrolled Nursing (EN) programme. The college had three classrooms, a library and a two-storey hostel accommodation for female students. The gentlemen had their hostel (“White House”) accommodation located at the center of Tamale, near the Tamale Central Hospital.

The college since its establishment has gone through several transformations. The initial mandate of the college was to train Enrolled Nurses. The college upgraded to training Qualified Registered Nurses (QRNs), then to State Registered Nurses (SRN) and in the year 1999, commenced the training of Registered General Nurses (RGN – Diploma). In 2009, the college was among the few Nursing Training Colleges in the country to be accredited to train Registered Midwives (RM – Diploma) and in 2018, the college has the accreditation to run the Post NAC/NAP Midwifery programme.

With this dual mandate in the training of Nurses and Midwives, the college is well positioned to become one of the LEAD institutions in the training of Nurses and Midwives’ in Ghana and beyond.
