Persons with Disabilities complain of extortion by some Assembly officials

Some officials of the Builsa-North District Assembly in the Upper East Region are standing accused of demanding money from beneficiaries of the District Assembly Disability Funds.

According to Upper East Regional President of Ghana Federation of Disability Organization (GFD), David Aniah, some officials of the assembly have demanded money from persons with disabilities after disbursement; an act he says infringes upon the Act that governs Assembly Common Fund.

“I have seen someone who has collected GHc1500.00, to go and buy an artificial leg, unfortunately as we speak now, the person still hasn’t got the leg and the money is also not there because, part of the money is gone to an official who we are not able to trace.” Mr. Aniah said.

Mr. Aniah made this allegation at Sandema, capital of Builsa-North District, during the disbursement of GHc15, 541.00 to 126 beneficiaries drawn from the district.

Speaking to A1 News in an interview, Builsa-North District Head of Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, Rahinatu Braimah under whose care the funds are disbursed debunked the allegation.

“It is a false accusation, what the President said is false. He always sits and frame stories.”

A beneficiary of the fund, Asuah Puri Christiana in an interview with A1 News however confirms the scandalous claim made by the Regional President of Ghana Federation of Disability Organization.

Builsa North District Chief Executive, David Afoko in dismay however urged persons with disabilities to report officials who try to extort money from them to the assembly for appropriate solution rather than resorting to reporting their grievances through the media.
