JHS students dropping out to ride "Mahama can do"

Acting District Director of Education for Bolgatanga East, Ann Estella Kyee-ebo has hinted that many Junior High School students in the district are opting to ride tricycle popularly called “Mahama Can Do” on commercial basis, to the detriment of their classrooms.

Madam Kyee-ebo raised this concern in a on a speech delivered on her behalf during the recent Independence Day celebration held at Zuarungu in the Bolgatanga East District.

According to her, the situation needs an urgent attention by all stakeholders including parents to addressed, adding that the situation is hampering education in the district, therefore, parent, traditional leaders and other relevant authorities should come on board to support the Ghana Education Service to sensitize students to have decided to dropped out of school to ride “Mahama can do”.

Touching on the ban on caning, Madam Kyee-ebo said the Ghana Education Service had to ban the practice to avoid abuses by some teachers.

Canning was used as a corrective measure by teachers to students. However, it was grossly abused by some teachers.

These abuses ended up hurting some of the children who were not able to get what the teacher has taught them in the classroom. The students who suffered such canning only turn up hating such teachers who were supposed to impart knowledge to them. The objective therefore is lost, hence the need to abolish it. He explained.
