Skyfi, a citywide public Wi-Fi has been launched in Accra to provide affordable and accessible internet for the members of the public.
Speaking at the launch of the new Wi-Fi service, Mr Kobina Richardson, Acting Chief Executive Officer of E- Connnecta, the providers of Skyfi, said the new internet service was intended to provide easy access to users as well as providing affordability.
He said, unlike other services, the Skyfi was very much resistance to extreme weather conditions, thereby making it suitable throughout all seasons.
He disclosed that the phase one of the service would cover areas such as the
Accra Technical University, Tema Lorry Station, Airport, Burma Camp, Korle-Bu, University of Professional Studies, Makola and Osu among other areas in Accra.
He said the phase two of the Skyfi Wi-Fi service would extend its coverage to other parts of the country with an increased focus on tertiary institutions.
“At the centre of what Skyfi offers is convenience. This means, once you join the Skyfi family in one location, you are automatically enrolled in all Skyfi enabled locations. Your single login credentials will connect you anywhere Skyfi is available,” he explained.
Dr Omane Boamah, Minister of Communications said the internet offered a lot of opportunities for growth to a developing economy like Ghana and government had invested in the sector to provide easy access to all.
He said the opportunities and improvements that the Internet offers with respect to education, health, agriculture, retail and government could also not be overemphasised and urged agencies in charge to be well placed to take advantage of opportunities the Internet presents to advance their objectives.
The Minister commended E-Connnecta and SkyFi for the innovative idea to help Ghanaians, especially, students to beef up with their research work on campus.
He said government was committed to collaborate with internet service providers to offer high-speed internet at very affordable prices and good quality for the benefit of everybody irrespective of their location.
