5 assemblies in Upper East Region to benefit from pilot phase of Rearing for Food and Jobs programme

Five Out of the fifteen municipal and district
assemblies in the Upper East Region have been earmarked to benefit from the
pilot phase of government’s flagship programme, ‘Rearing for Food and Jobs’.

These assemblies include, Kassena-Nankana West
District, Kassena-Nankana Municipal, Bongo District, Bawku West District and
Nabdam District.

The 5-year programme will develop a
competitive and efficient livestock industry that will increase domestic
production of meat and meat products, reduce importation of livestock products
and also provide employment.

Speaking on A1 Radio, Upper East Regional
Director of the Department of Food and Agriculture, Francis Ennor, expressed
optimism that the programme will contribute to revamping the defunct Zuarungu
Meat Factory.

“The ultimate aim is that, we will get an
investor who will come and operate the meat factory in the region. So, we are
projecting that by the end of the period, we will get a lot of animals within
the 5 regions of the North and neighboring countries for slaughtering at the
factory”, he said.

He laid fears of possible outbreak of diseases on the animals saying “the veterinary aspect is very well strengthened”

Mr. Ennor admonished the youth, women and
organized groups to get registered in order to benefit from the programme.
