A researcher by name Danladi Rock, born in the Volta Region of Ghana, is a Pan African revolution speaker and musician. He has for some time been traveling in various communities and districts in the Upper East Region sensitizing local farmers on the dangers involves in the planting of Genetic Modified Organism (GMOs).
According to him, farmers should desist from the cheap thinking that GMOs are here to enhance crop size, reduce a plant or animal’s resistance to pathogens, disease or  help crops to become more drought-resistant as the climate changes, rather they should focus on the unlabeled dangers it has on their diet.
“GMOs have increased herbicide use because most of its crops are engineered to be “herbicide tolerant”, that is they are deadly weed killer. For example, Monsanto sells Roundup Ready crops, designed to survive applications of their Roundup herbicide. This is causing farmers to use even more toxic herbicides every year. Not only does this create environmental harm, but its foods contain higher residues of toxic herbicides. Roundup, for example, is linked to sterility, hormone disruption, birth defects and cancer.” He explained.
The researcher has further given explanations that, GMOs are unhealthy and the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) over the years has urged doctors to prescribe only non-GMO diets for all patients due to it unhealthy nature.
“Numerous health problems increased after GMOs were introduced in 1996. The percentage of Americans with three or more chronic illnesses jumped from 7% to 13% in just 9 years; food allergies sky rocketed and disorders such as autism, reproductive disorders, digestive problems and others are on the rise. Although there is not sufficient research to confirm that GMOs are a contributing factor, doctors’ groups such as the AAEM tell us not to wait before we start protecting ourselves and especially our children who are most at risk.” He said.
Danladi Rock has reasoned with the local farmers to take pragmatic steps in saving their lives and foods as various relevant stakeholders and governments have failed in sensitizing them on the real dangers of GMOs due to political ambition.
